A brief history of an iconic event<\/h2>\n

The far north of Sweden is a vast, rugged wilderness. Stretching over thousands of kilometers, the terrain is harsh, the weather is variable, and signs of civilization are few and far between.<\/p>\n

The dramatic landscapes and breathtaking scenery have always been a source of inspiration for Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven’s founder, \u00c5ke Nordin. As a young nature enthusiast, he spent all his free time in the forest and often went on week-long hikes heading north. There, he developed ideas and made plans to create outdoor equipment that was better and more functional.<\/p>\n

\u00c5ke always wanted others, who didn\u2019t have immediate access to nature, to experience what gave him so much purpose. More importantly, he wanted people to experience the feeling of freedom offered by trekking, even if just for a few days. So, in 1979, \u00c5ke started what was then called the ‘Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven Weeks’<\/strong>. It was the first step in bringing curious beginners into nature, lending them gear, and showing them how to use it.<\/p>\n

In 2005, Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven took a step further and removed many of the logistical and emotional barriers of the legendary long-distance trail Kungsleden<\/strong> in Sweden. This long-duration trekking style gave birth to the Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven Classic as we know it today. Soon, Swedish hikers were joined by people from all over the world, and the success led Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven to expand the Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven Classic and Swedish trekking culture to other countries. The rest is history.<\/p>\n

1979<\/strong> – To spark interest in trekking (and outdoor life in general), Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven starts the ‘Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven Weeks’. Planting the seed for what would become the Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven Classic. It takes curious beginners into nature, lending them gear and showing them how to use it.<\/p>\n

2005<\/strong> – In the first Swedish Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven Classic, 152 adventurous participants cross the finish line. Ten years later, the number grows to 2,136.<\/p>\n

2014<\/strong> – The first Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven Classic event outside Sweden takes place: the Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven Classic Denmark, on the island of Funen. Along its 75 kilometers, the trail offered participants coastal landscapes and a pleasant atmosphere.<\/p>\n

2016 to present<\/strong> – Inspiring even more people to explore trekking and outdoor life, the Fj\u00e4llr\u00e4ven Classic expands beyond Scandinavia, including events in Germany, the USA, the UK, Korea, and Chile.<\/p>\n

\nAllemansr\u00e4tten \u2013 ‘the freedom to roam’<\/strong> means having access to nature and is a significant part of Swedish culture. In fact, it is enshrined in Swedish law as a public right. Essentially, Allemansr\u00e4tten gives people, including visitors to Sweden, the right to spend time in Sweden’s great outdoors. The concept exists to some extent in other countries as well, but in Sweden, the right goes further. You can cross and even stay (for a short period) on private property without prior permission.\n<\/div>\n

The Seven Principles of Leave No Trace<\/h2>\n

1. Plan ahead and prepare.<\/strong> Learn about the area, check maps, read literature, and plan trips that will have the least possible impact.<\/p>\n

2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces.<\/strong> Use trails whenever possible and follow regulations related to camping locations. It\u2019s a good idea to camp in areas that have already been impacted by use.<\/p>\n

3. Dispose of waste properly.<\/strong> It is the responsibility of every visitor in nature to leave a place clean when leaving. This includes planning meals that generate little waste and bringing a trash bag to collect any waste.<\/p>\n

4. Leave what you find.<\/strong> The sense of discovery is one of the most satisfying aspects of being in nature, so it\u2019s important to leave rocks, plants, archaeological artifacts, and other objects as they are.<\/p>\n

5. Minimize campfire impact.<\/strong> Build a campfire only if local regulations allow it, if there is enough wood in the area to support a fire and regenerate afterward.<\/p>\n

6. Respect wildlife.<\/strong> The best way to learn about wildlife is through quiet observation, rather than disturbing or approaching animals just to get a “better view.” Animals should never be touched or captured.<\/p>\n

7. Be considerate of other people.<\/strong> Excessive noise, uncontrolled pets, and damage to the environment all take away from the appeal of nature, so be respectful to others.<\/p>\n
