In the case of human beings, maintaining the body’s core temperature at 37°C is part of this process, and our body is constantly working to stay at the ideal temperature through mechanisms to preserve/generate heat or lose heat.

In addition to physiological adaptations such as vasoconstriction/vasodilation, shivering, and perspiration, physiological differences such as body fat percentage, muscle mass, age, and acclimatization contribute to our body’s ability to preserve/generate or lose heat. In general, people who live in warm places “freeze” in locations with lower temperatures, and people who live in temperate climates “melt” in hot places, as each body adapts to the conditions of where the person lives, being more efficient at losing or preserving/generating heat.

When we engage in outdoor activities in climatic conditions very different from those we are used to, maintaining this balance will be more challenging, so we must act consciously to help our body in the work of thermoregulation through nutrition, clothing, and the adoption of appropriate behaviors. Acclimatization (the process of gradually exposing oneself to high or low temperatures, especially when engaging in physical activity) will also contribute to your body’s adaptation process.

Below are some general tips so you can help your body maintain the ideal temperature in various circumstances. In the next articles, we will address some specific problems, such as hypothermia and heat-related conditions, in a little more detail.

In hot environments

Clothing: prefer lightweight, light-colored garments and smart fabrics that absorb moisture from your skin and promote evaporation and heat loss. Avoid cotton clothing, which retains water and becomes heavy when it absorbs sweat, and protect your skin from sun exposure by wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a hat/cap, in addition to sunscreen.

Hydration: adequate hydration is important, especially on hot days and in very dry environments, since the evaporation of sweat on our skin promotes heat loss very efficiently. How much water should we consume? The ideal measure is to drink water to quench thirst, gradually, since the body absorbs only 200–250 ml of water every 15 minutes; plan ahead, know your body and its needs, as each individual has different requirements and there is no magic recipe or universal formula (you should start paying attention to your water intake during the activities you normally practice). When visiting very arid regions, plan to carry more water than usual, as a great deal of moisture is lost to the dry air through evaporation (without sweat even having the chance to accumulate on your skin). Find out about resupply options along your route and always remember to treat water collected in the field before consuming it.

Acclimatization: acclimatizing to carry out activities in very hot environments is essential. Expose yourself gradually to the heat if you are not used to it, especially before physically very demanding activities, such as trail running or carrying a very heavy pack uphill. Avoid engaging in activities during the hottest part of the day (between 12h and 14h), especially on open, shadeless trails; cool yourself constantly by wetting your body to promote evaporation and heat loss, reducing the intensity or pace of the activity, and taking rest breaks frequently.

In cold environments

Clothing: use the layering system, through which you will be able to regulate your temperature more effectively. Remove layers as the body warms up, avoiding excessive perspiration: the evaporation of sweat on the skin steals heat very quickly, and exposure to wind with a sweaty body ends up promoting heat loss very rapidly. Do not forget to protect your head and hands in lower temperatures, also avoiding frostbite injuries in sub-zero temperatures. Keep in mind that it is easier and more important to preserve heat than to rewarm limbs or people.

Photo: Alex – Pixabay

Nutrition: the body needs fuel to produce heat and maintain its core temperature at 37°C. Eat frequently, keep fast-absorbing simple carbohydrates on hand (such as honey, energy gel, or raw cane sugar), and plan to have reserve food for unexpected situations. Remember that you need to consume far more calories the lower the temperature you are in and the longer the duration of the activity, so plan accordingly.

Hydration: when engaging in activities in cold environments, but especially at high altitudes (above 3,000 meters), adequate hydration is essential. In cold environments we urinate more frequently, and at altitude one of the physiological adaptations to the acclimatization process also results in urinating more, which places hydration at the top of the priority list. Additionally, when engaging in mountain activities at altitude, a great deal of moisture is also lost through breathing, especially when breathing through an open mouth.

Thermal insulation: equally important in heat preservation and in the prevention and treatment of hypothermia, thermal insulation will reduce heat loss through direct contact with wet and frozen rock or ground. It should be used whenever possible, even during a snack break in the middle of the day.

Emergency blanket: a practically indispensable resource for those venturing into remote areas, it can be useful in hot conditions but is especially important for retaining body heat and preventing hypothermia. It should wrap around the person completely, and its role is to reduce heat loss through radiation.

Rain

Clothing: an anorak is essential, especially on cold days, but in all weather conditions. Good, breathable, and waterproof gear will prevent you from ending up with your body completely soaked. As water passes over your body it will steal heat, even on seemingly warm days, contributing to hypothermia. Except in extremely hot environments with brief exposure, protecting yourself from the rain will be paramount to preserving energy, which can make a great difference in activities lasting many hours and days in challenging weather conditions.

Wind

Clothing: keep the anorak within reach; the wind can easily switch from ally to villain. In very hot environments, exposure to wind will help you lose heat and regulate your temperature; however, in cold environments it will quickly steal the heat from your body and favor hypothermia. Avoid exposing yourself to the wind in mild temperatures, and be careful on cold days — the combination of wet + cold + wind is the perfect recipe for hypothermia!

Practitioners of activities in remote areas with good preparation and adequate resources can manage and avoid heat and cold problems with ease. The most important thing is not to be lazy about stopping to remove or add layers, eating frequently, and carrying a few extra grams to have resources that can be essential for avoiding thermoregulation problems — which, in most cases, can be prevented.

Happy adventuring!

Homeostasis is the self-regulatory process that living organisms use to remain in balance, adapting to external factors to stay in adequate conditions for their survival.
