Ingredients – Sweet pancake at the campsite

To make the pancake batter, there are two options: use a ready-made mix or make your own homemade mix, choose what works best for you.

Ready-made pancake mix:

There are pre-made mixes on the market that only require the addition of water. If you use a mix like this, be careful not to let the powder come into contact with any moisture during the hike; if the mix is liquid, make sure to close the package tightly to avoid accidents. Bringing the original packaging may be a good idea because of the preparation instructions, but you can also photograph the instructions with your cell phone and leave the original packaging at home.

Some ready-made mixes include added protein, which can be a way to improve the nutritional value of your breakfast.

Make your own pancake mix at home:

  • 4 ½ cups of wheat flour
  • ¾ cup of powdered milk
  • ¼ cup of sugar (optional – pancakes can also be sweetened with honey, molasses, maple syrup, Nutella, etc.)
  • 2 tablespoons of baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1 ½ teaspoons of salt

How to prepare sweet pancakes while camping

If you are using a ready-made mix – take the large Passage bowl and add the amount of water indicated on the package to the mix (add the water and stir/whisk with a fork to homogenize the batter).

If you are using the homemade pancake mix recipe – add ¾ cup of water for each 1 cup of dry mix (add the water to the mix and stir/whisk with a fork).

Tip: Try mashing a banana and mixing it into the pancake batter. This will add texture and flavor to the recipe.

1. Add oil or butter to the frying pan and heat over medium heat. (Note: the Sea to Summit Frontier frying pan is not suitable for use over campfires. If you are using butter, know that it will burn at a lower temperature than some oils – it is better to use a lower temperature on the stove until you find the right setting).

2. Use the Passage cup to measure ¼ to ⅓ cup of batter and pour it into the frying pan.

3. Let the pancake cook until you see bubbles forming on the top surface. The Frontier frying pan is made of high-quality aluminum alloy, which spreads heat quickly and evenly. It also has a ceramic non-stick finish, which means your pancakes won’t stick or burn.

4. Now you are ready to flip the pancake. This is the point where low-quality camping kitchen utensils sometimes go disastrously wrong. Don’t worry – the Frontier frying pan has a very firm Click-Safe handle – it won’t come loose when you flip your precious breakfast.

5. Slide the spatula under each pancake and flip them with a quick and decisive motion. Unlike some camping kitchen utensils, the Sea to Summit Folding Spatula is the perfect size for this.

An important tip: do not use Passage cutlery for cooking – their polypropylene has a lower melting point than the nylon of the Folding Spatula and may melt.

6. When the pancake is golden on both sides, transfer it to a Passage bowl.

Expert tip – pour hot water into a Passage plate and place the Passage bowl with the pancakes inside the plate – the hot water will help maintain the pancakes’ temperature. Even if you use boiling water, the temperature will not damage the Passage plate or bowl.

7. When all the pancakes are ready, spread a generous portion of honey over your hot pancake stack, or let everyone choose their preferred topping.

8. Sprinkle a handful of nuts over your pancakes. They will add protein, crunch, and flavor to the recipe.

9. If you like, add dried fruit. They provide flavor and natural sugars.

Extra tips

  • Think about cleaning while preparing your meal. Take a moment to add some water and a bit of biodegradable soap to the frying pan as soon as you serve the last pancake.
  • Utensils made of polypropylene are easy to clean – just use biodegradable soap and a soft sponge (or natural scrubber).
  • Dispose of any wastewater according to Leave No Trace principles, at least 70 meters away (70 wide steps) from the nearest water source (river, stream, or lake). Collect food scraps and carry them out.
