Studies, work, family, commitments… there are many variables that directly interfere with our routines. In fact, they shake them up a bit. But how to deal with it? Well, I’m sorry to say there’s no single correct answer. What’s certain is that there must always be acceptance to adapt to the new.
I’ve been through several situations throughout my Mountain Bike journey. I moved to another city with my wife, worked afternoons and evenings for many years and also on Saturdays, I became a father… In each of these moments, it was necessary to plan how to adjust my training to the new reality.
Yes, sometimes I went too far adjusting other things to guarantee priority to my training, but I paid the price. Sometimes avoiding responsibilities, too. Anyway, I learned from it and nowadays I try to adapt my amateur athlete routine — which also comes with responsibilities and commitments to companies and people — to the other areas of my life
.
Create a calendar and define how much time you have available for your training sessions. Avoid rescheduling to prevent conflicts with other commitments. In this example, I use the Training Peaks app
Adapting My Workout Routine
Before, I did weight training at the gym — now, at home. Before, I trained only outdoors — now 50% of my bike training is indoor. What I’m getting at is that when situations arise that will interfere with your daily life, talk to the people close to you and explain what’s happening so they understand and can help you make a quick and efficient adjustment to these changes. Try to create more than one possibility and even test them for a while to see if you can stick to them. Constant dripping wears away the stone.
As much as we want to be rock-solid, at some point we will have to give in. And today I can say that these changes are healthy because they challenge us and set an example for other areas of our lives.
All the best!
